  19. Well, it depends a lot on what type of railfanning you are
  20. interested in.  There are magazines and fans who live for chasing
  21. steam excursions, and then there are others for whom modern
  22. high-horsepower units are the thing.  Then, there are still others
  23. who are interested in more international things.

  25. Trains and Railfan are the two middle-of-the-road standards, which
  26. try to include something for everyone -- and often make no one happy.

  28. Actually I don't think any fan who is really interested in current
  29. North American operations should be without Railway Age.  Yes, it's
  30. a trade journal and talks about such things as economics of 
  31. railroading, but it also provides a perspective that the railfan
  32. publications don't.

  34. Another good publication, more a newsletter than a magazine, is 
  35. International Railway Traveler, whose focus is more on the travel
  36. experience and whose coverage is about 50 per cent North American
  37. and the rest foreign.

  40. There are also many regional and special-interest publications, some
  41. of which overlap with the model railroad field.  (Model magazines
  42. also often have good prototype articles and photos.)
