  18. RESULTS: THE WRTH INDUSTRY AWARDS
  19.  
  20. This is the fifth year of a prestigious award scheme organlsed
  21. by the World Radio TV Handbook. In over 40 years, the WRTH has
  22. received many awards itself as the Industry reference standard
  23. in the field of International broadcasting. We believe in
  24. recognising excellence in other parts of the international
  25. broadcasting industry. We hope these will act as a stimulus to
  26. provide the market place with even better products.

  28. At this moment, thousands of hours of programming are being
  29. broadcast from stations round the world. It is NOT our intention
  30. to give awards to the programme makers, or individual stations.
  31. To be fair we would have to understand a multitude of languages
  32. and have an in depth knowledge of the studio facilities
  33. available to the producer. The WRTH is a reference book, and we
  34. do not feel it is right to pick out a broadcaster as being the
  35. "best". In the equipment field, however, we do think that awards
  36. are needed.

  38. The main WRTH awards have been given in three categories this
  39. year. Here are the results:

  41. *       Best Portable Receiver 1992: Sony ICF-SW55. This new
  42.         receiver is not the most sophisticated in the Sony
  43.         range, but it combines a number of useful tuning
  44.         features, versatile text based memories and good
  45.         performance into a handy package. We encourage Sony to
  46.         develop their receiver technology further to balance
  47.         recent innovations in the field of tuning convenience.

  49. *       Best Communications Receiver 1992: Yaesu FRG-100.
  50.         Although only just launched on the market, Yaesu has
  51.         succeeded in bringing improved technology and features
  52.         within the price range of a much wider group of
  53.         short-wave broadcast listeners.  It has been a long time
  54.         since Yaesu revamped their broadcast receiver. But for
  55.         many listeners it will be worth the wait! A good package
  56.         at an affordable price.

  58. *       Most Innovative Receiver Designer 1992: Lowe
  59.         Electronics. The English company of Lowe Electronics
  60.         have already won an award for their HF series of
  61.         receivers. But we feel they deserve another award, this
  62.         time for their innovative design and back-to-basics
  63.         approach to receiver technology, especially on the new
  64.         HF-150.  Lowe's chief designer John Thorpe has surprised
  65.         many observers who proclaimed the European receiver
  66.         business to be a thing of the past. Lowe's dedication to
  67.         creating high performance and easy to use receivers is
  68.         at last getting wider recognition.

  70. But that's not all, The WRTH editorial team decided to present a
  71. special fourth award. This is not to a receiver manufacturer but
  72. an organlsation which has done a great deal to report on the
  73. world of broadcasting year after year. On September 17th 1992
  74. editor of the World Radio Handbook, Andrew Sennitt presented BBC
  75. Monitoring with an award marking two decades of co-operation
  76. between the two organisations. We value the work being done by
  77. the WBI staff in Caversham under the leadership of Richard
  78. Measham and we thought this anniversary was worth marking by
  79. presenting them with the award for Special Contributions to
  80. International Broadcasting.

  83. welcomed by the editors. These awards are not restricted to any
  84. country, or language.
