- Cameras of today, with all their program modes and electronic frame
- counters, etc., must retain state information between uses. The Nikon
- maintains this information in RAM, and keeps it (briefly) between
- battery changes because of stored charge. If the RAM is allowed to
- fade, then the camera must choose an "initial state". The choosing and
- selecting of that initial state is the "total reset" (of state).

- There is also a "panic sequence" that returns the N8008 to a "standard"
- program mode. I think it's activated by holding down the front and back
- wedges of the pie cluster for 1s. See your manual for details.
