- Just wanted to jump in here and clarify that I was not trying to flame Anne
- D. for the Pet Peeves post she made by the remarks that I made. I am
- grateful to Anne and Betsy for adding to the thread with their remarks and
- helping me to see that I was not clear enough with my post.
-
- I simply jumped on the soapbox and got carried away with the garbage that
- gets tossed around about dogs being bad when blame should be assigned to
- owners.
-
-
-
- On a side note, I recently had to shop for new homeowners insurance and my
- pet peeve is that I was questioned to find out if I owned an aggressive
- breed of dog. The breeds specifically mentioned were German Shepherd Dog,
- Doberman Pinscher, Rottweiler, Chow Chow, and I believe they mentioned
- Akita and Boxer. This really steamed me because it is an uninformed and
- reactive element of our society that is so eager to condemn before they
- understand.
-
- From my own experience, I know several Dobies through the classes I have
- taught and the dogs owned by friends. None could be described as
- aggressive. One bitch even "allowed" a three year old to "groom the
- doggie" and had the child accidentally cut her ear off with nothing more
- than a scream from the dog who was found hiding behind the door from her
- "young groomer." (Rest assured, the ear was reattached and the scissors are
- now kept much higher off the ground.) The males have been really fine dogs
- and the bitches have been sweet, delightful girls. Many of them are rescue
- dogs who still having shining temperament despite it all. I have had good
- experiences with GSD and the Rotties that I know have been big, black lap
- puppies. I have only known a few Chows and they reflected their owners too
- well.
-
- It makes me quite upset that I may be dictated to by an insurance company
- about my choice of dog. A tale that was bandied around my training club
- for a while said that New York City had the greatest number of problems
- with bites from Golden Retrievers than any other breed of dog. I can't
- support or deny the story but it would seem to be logical based on the
- number of Goldens to be found anywhere these days. And it is nothing
- against Goldens. It just seems that the likelihood of a bite from a breed
- would seem to be as dependent if not more dependent on the population of
- the breed rather than on the breed itself.
-
- Hope I make sense and I am still 100% behind everything that Anne and Betsy
- said, I was trying to add to the discussion and not contradict anything
- that was said. I apologize if I was unclear in my reply to Anne and thanks
- again to Anne and Betsy for pointing it out to me as graciously as they
- did.
-
- Happy 1993 Everyone!
