- (I'm still breathing hard from a bit of off-leash play, so I thought I'd
- bring some things I've learned up for discussion.)
-
- I don't chase Greta. Ever. She either comes when called, or hits the
- ground when she sees me coming. (Then we go to where I was telling her
- to "come" to. Nothing harsh, just consistent.)
-
- When we play off-leash, I let her circle and dart at me. I started off
- by running backwards with her on-leash. She bounds and sort of nips at
- my feet.
-
- When she's "off-leash" I leave the leash connected to her; I figure it
- slows her down a bit in a sprint. Also, we go back and forth from on-
- leash to off-leash without much notice. She doesn't seem too bothered
- by it. I think it helps to break the "here's your one chance to run
- like the wind until you get caught" routine.
-
- I start play by dropping the leash when she's sitting, then running away.
- I find that running backwards and jumping to one side and spinning
- around when she approaches keeps her running lots more than me, and it
- keeps her running at me.
-
- When I'm ready for her to come in, I pause, wait to see if she seems
- ready to come in (no need to make it hard), then crouch and say "come".
- She normally bolts at me, darts to my right and circles up on my left.
- Then she gets some belly-attention. This repeats several times.
-
- I think the crouch and pause is important. My previous dog, Mia, was
- mature (and not trained) when we got her and loved to "fight" with me,
- but whenever I'd stop and crouch, she'd come sauntering up for a head
- massage.
-
- Well, I'm relaxed from our play, and I think Greta is in bed with my
- wife, so I'm missing out...
