- Beagles are stuborn with a capital "S"! The male I had would only do things
- if he thought they were a good idea. Pick up a copy of "People, Pooches, and
- Problems" at a book store or pet supply store. I wish I had had this book
- when I had my Beagle, the techniques would have worked wonders.
-
- As an interim measure you could try one or both of the following. Fill up
- some water baloons and throw them at the hound when she ignors your command
- to stop barking. Accompany the arrival of the baloon on target with a low,
- growling "NO!". The other strategy is to put five or ten pennies in an empty
- coffee can, tape the lid on, and throw this in the vicinity of the animal.
- BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO HIT THE DOG WITH THE CAN! Of course the throw is
- accompanied by the "NO!". The idea is to do something that will get the dog's
- undivided attention and give it the impression that it is not beyond your
- range of control.
-
- Also, sounds like the hound needs work on the "come" command. The book
- suggested above has excellent meathods for remedial training.
-
- Good luck! My experience with my beloved flop-eared Beagle could have been
- well described by the following line from Shakespeare's Henery V.
- "... though from my heart I do love the little bully..."
