- It depends. Most dogs need it at some point in their lives. Nail growth
- varies from dog to dog, I've had dog's that need a trim every week, and dogs
- that can go a whole month. If the dog spends a lot of time of rough surfaces,
- like cement, they may wear away enough to keep them at a reasonable
- length...this seems to depend partly on breed though, depending on what sort
- of feet the dog has. The tight 'cat feet' of a dobie should have nails that
- don't come anywhere NEAR touching the ground when properly trimmed. They
- would have to be REALLY long before they did. A dog with a more elongated
- 'hare foot' will have it's nails long enough to touch the ground much sooner
- and the nails may wear down enough on their own, unless the dog is always on
- grass or carpet. Aparently some dogs will chew their nails off, but you can't
- count on this!
-
- There was an old saying that if the dog 'clicks' when it walks over a hard
- surface, the nails need trimming, this is true to an extent. If my dobie
- clicked, it would mean he'd needed a trim about 6 months ago :) You don't
- want nails on any dog that press into the ground, since this forces the toes
- out of position and can cause lameness...you could compare it to wearing
- poorly fitting shoes ALL DAY, ouch!
-
- Another special thing to keep in mind is dewclaws, the funny claws found on
- the legs of some dogs. These NEVER touch the ground so they can grow
- indefinitely and actually grow around in a circle and press into the flesh of
- the dog's leg, ick!
