- Well, you do have a pulling problem :+)
-
- The type of collar used to control a dog is dictated by the dog's
- touch sensitivity. A tug on a buckle collar will get the attention
- of a touch-sensitive dog but will be ignored by a touch-insensitive
- dog. I believe in using the least amount of force that works, so:
- * if you can control the dog with a buckle collar, use it; else
- * if you can control the dog with a choke collar, use it; else
- * use a prong collar
-
- I use a prong with my touch-insensitive lab (labs were bred to
- be touch-insensitive, so they wouldn't notice things like
- ice-cold water and thorn bushes :+). Yeah, it looks nasty, but
- consider that my dog feels the prong with the same intensity
- that a touch-sensitive dog feels a buckle collar.
-
- There are other alternatives, such as harnesses and Halti's
- (aka Come-a-longs) that are good for dogs with very sensitive
- or weak necks.
-
- BTW, I always tell my students that when you increase the
- compulsion (ie, go up the ladder in collars), you must
- *double* the amount of praise given :+)
