- I used the "attach (tether to overhead line) to dog's *buckle* collar" method on
- my first dog and lost her to a broken neck. I was stunned as she was a Samoyed
- with a very stout neck. Also, I used a nylon rope as the overhead to absorb
- shock; I thought this would be OK. Since then I have gone to a harness as
- opposed to a collar and I feel safe that an accident like this will not repeat.
- I still use a heat-set (fairly low stretch and 1000 pound test) nylon rope with
- a strong brass pully. The run I use is > 100 ft long and about 7' high. I use a
- chain leash (a strong one) and clip it on a clip which is attached to the
- pully. This allows me to walk him to the run and simply attach the leash. The
- leash is just long enough to let him lie down with only a small amount of force
- pulling up. Don't use long chains or they may get tangled in them and strangle.
- You can use cable instad of rope; I just had alot of this rope. The pully
- reduces wear and noise. The rope will wear out a metal ring pretty quick and I
- have had the plastic coating on the wire wear out too. I don't use collars any
- more because I think the dog is much more comfortable in the harness. You can
- pass the seat belt through the harness when your dog is in the car too.
-
- One more note: to reduce the chance of the dog winding himself around the pole
- or tree at the end of the run, tie a knot in the line or put a clamp a few feet
- from the end so he can't get around it.
