- I would think a high portion of this is strictly instinct. That way if an
- animal did have to survive on his own (ie. abandoned by his mother, mother
- dies, etc) he would still have a chance of survival.
-
- My impression is that domestic cats end up killing their prey mostly by
- playing with them to death. When I've watched my guys up at the cottage
- (with an abundant supply of moles, mice, and chipmunks), the poor thing
- usually dies from fright or exhaustion, and not because the cat finally
- killed him.
-
- I related this story quite a while ago, but will repeat it briefly. My
- husband and I were at the cottage theorizing on this topic. Cairo (RIP)
- had just finished playing with a mouse (because it had died) and had let
- Salvador have it. We were discussing the theory that all cats know how to
- hunt by instinct, but they need to be taught to eat their prey by their
- moms, when we heard "Crunch, crunch, crunch..." We looked down to see
- Salvador polishing off the last bits of the mouse. All that was left was
- a foot and the tail.
-
- It was a perfect symbiotic relationship - Cairo hunted them, Salvador ate
- them.
