- I successfully bred canaries a few years ago. Got 14 from 2 pairs.
- Currently, we have a pair of canaries. They live in the same cage but do not
- plan to breed them (give 'em a nest) till next spring.
-
- I suggest to anyone that has both sexes of canaries in a common cage, to
- monitor their actions for signs of incompatability (fighting or plucking).
- You MUST have two perches AND seed dishes in a shared cage. Only pair up
- compatible pairs of canaries. Never put more than one male in a cage with
- females. My experience dictates that males should be kept in separate
- cages, alone or with one compatible hen. And that hens may be grouped in a
- large cage when not breeding; I had 8 hens in a 2x2x2 foot cage with no
- problems.
-
- A piece of shredded Kleenex tissue in the cage keeps the hen from plucking
- her feathers when she is bent on making a nest. Whether it's breeding
- season or not. A strip of towel/terry cloth tied to the side of the cage
- lasts longer for this purpose too; keeps her busy pulling threads out.
-
- As far as other (larger) birds scaring our little singer, it varies with the
- canary. Our present pair go about their business as if nothing is happening
- when our conures jump onto or off their cage. We have a blue-crowned and a
- green-cheek conure, and a pair of lutino 'tiels which are all loose during
- the day together.
-
- The key in keeping more than one pet bird together is in watching how they
- get along. Don't let birds whose personalities clash come together. In our
- case the reason the 2 conures get along is that the green-cheek's assertive
- personality is balanced by the blue-crowned's larger size. We had to sell
- our love-bird years ago because he would bite all the other bird's toes. No
- offense to anyone owning love-birds, but I would never suggest one except as
- a single pet; it has to be the fiestiest breed I've encountered.
-
- Well, enough for now. Go spend some time with your birdies now...
