- This brings back memories...

- I still have a yogurt jar full of infertile Java Bird eggs, from when I was
- breeding my original pairs. Lets see... thirteen are now grown, perhaps
- eight died (horribly: crushed when the cardinal overturned the nest box, or
- pecked to death when they dropped out - I was vigilant, but I guess not
- vigilant enough), and some of the rest managed to last until yours truly
- collected them for the jar. The rest were probably eaten by the parents,
- something which I've seen wild birds do when eggs become obviously nonviable,
- for example, when they break or are trampled upon.
-
- I worried about depletion in the female birds, since their eggs were at least
- 10 percent of their body size. Into the cage went cups of crushed vitamin
- and mineral pills, and hard-boiled chicken eggs. (They dont have a taste
- for the meat - only my hand-fed sparrows do.)
