  13. Greetings, good and gentle folk!

  15.        In answer to the question about the Canonical hours of the day, a
  16. quick trip to the dictionary provided the following information:
  17.  
  18.        Matins & Lauds -- "celebrated together as the first Canonical Hour;
  19.                            the Night Office"
  20.        Prime -- the first hour of the day; the second Canonical Hour
  21.        Terce -- the third; the third
  22.        Sext -- the sixth hour of the day; the fourth Canonical Hour
  23.        None(s) -- the ninth; the fifth
  24.        Vespers -- "the sixth Canonical Hour, sung in the late afternoon;
  25.                     evening worship"
  26.        Compline -- the seventh and last Canonical Hour

  28.        I don't have a source for this, but I remember the Hours as being
  29. placed at three-hour intervals around the clock: Lauds at 3 AM, Prime at
  30. 6 AM, Terce at 9 AM, Sext at midday, Nones at 3 PM, Vespers at 6 PM, and
  31. Compline at 9 PM.  Perhaps someone who's better versed in this sort of
  32. thing could elaborate or correct me? and I'll just go back and hide in 
  33. the holly....

  35.     I have a request of the Rialto: If any of the good gentles assem-
  36. bled here has previously posted a "newsletter-worthy" article, could he or
  37. she drop me a note at acsrdl@umassd.edu?  The once-glorious monthly pub-
  38. lication of River Keep has become a mangy, ill-fed beast of late, and as a
  39. former editor (and current printer's devil) I'm trying to find as much good
  40. material as I can to restore it to sleek and plump good health.
