- Not a bad distinction! I also liked another poster's citation of Jesus's
- injunction to "clothe the naked" (those *lacking* clothing) rather than
- the nude (those not wanting clothing).
-
- The English language uses "naked" in some senses not involving clothing,
- to refer to vulnerability or lack of protection. In financial markets,
- selling "naked options" means offering to sell a stock you don't currently
- own, as I understand it; you're gambling on being able to buy it cheaper in
- the future, so you're vulnerable to price increases.
-
- I once heard someone refer to a "naked beach" and thought that term should
- be used for an unsheltered, wind-and-surf-whipped shoreline, subject to
- erosion.
-
- I used these examples when the subject came up last year:
-
- "The mugger stripped his victim and left her naked."
- "The model dropped her robe and posed nude."
-
- There's a minor counterexample in colloquial usage; I've heard "get naked"
- and "party naked" used, often in the imperative, for the slightly more
- raucous forms of recreational or social nudity.
