Hmm...You can use any amplifier for your studio. But there are some things
you should know about matching comsumer gear with pro gear...
I am not hot on the idea of wiring up consumer gear to pro stuff. Its not that I have a snoty attitude about consumer gear. The main reason is levels and the Impedance mismatches that can occour.You want to take your mixer and plug into your consumer reciever. here is where the problem may start....Most pro gear has an output level of +4 dBu. Most consumer gear inputs run between -10dBu(123mV)
to -16 dBu (245mV). If you plug your reciever to the output of a pro mixer the result may be that the preamplifier on the reciever will be driven to a state of clipping. This would result in distortion and could eventually damage the reciever...
NOTE: some pro mixers have a seperate or switchable output allowing you to plug in -10dBu rated peice of gear.
Another problem I have found with consumer stuff is tons of cross talk. Yes, there are some nice consumer units for thousands of dollars with great specs, but if you want to spend that much on an amp, get a Crown or BGW amp.
I realize that budget is a big factor with project studios. I used to run my studio through an onkyo amp. Yea, it worked, but it had its flaws. If you budget is real tighht I would recomend the Alesis RA-100 power amp. Its clean, has a little balls behind it, and its around 300 bucks...
Any which way you look at it, you have to spend some money. Pick up a copy of E.Q. or Mix, magazine. I have seen some great used gear advertized in the back.
