- As someone who grew up in Nassau, Bahamas, I seem unable to find
- a lot of the reggae that is popular there. When I was in high
- school there, there used to be songs like:
- One Draw (rita marley), diseases(m & s), lots of songs
- from yellowman, sister nancy(was that the real name?) etc.
- as well as lots of songs that I heard and liked, but didn't know
- who sung them. They were popular at the time, and were heard and
- talked about in school. I am trying to find out how one can get these
- songs here in the US.
-
- Moreover, whenever one of my friends comes from there, I ask them to
- get me some stuff, but it usually is a mix, and I am again left without
- a clue as to who sung the song, or even what the correct title may be.
- This would not normally be a problem except that the quality of recording
- is usually such that I am left yearning for a CD or at least a tape.
-
- I have tried Tower Records and labels such as Shanachie here ( I live
- in Northern California). Problem here is that there is no way to tell
- which of the Yellowman albums they are good for me, and their selection
- is mostly dated to the "old guard" reggae greats, or artists who may be
- current, but very different from the kind of music that I am used to.
- Shanachie was good (got to hear the old "One Draw" after a long time"),
- but most of the songs in that album (first family) were too pop-oriented).
-
- All I know is the content of some of these songs, and I would be more than
- willing to share this is someone can help.
-
- Recent ones include:
- "Don't stop now" 1991
- Nobody move, nobody get hurt - old
- "hug me up" or something like that - 1992
- a song about fighting for a dollar where the words "one dollar" keep getting
- repeated. - 1990?
- song about yellowman walking into a jewel store -, old
- 2 or 3 songs (sequels to each other) about a girl named Sharon getting
- pregnant. - 3-4 yrs old, and other songs which sound similar in beat
- "speedrapping" - old
- a song which includes the lyrics:
- you love me like this
- she holler yes man
- me love you like-a how
- nancy love-a reagan
- (and other verses with the same beginning lines but varying analogies)
