-
- FYI, Linda Kohanov also uses this term in a new book called the "All Music
- Guide". It's a quite huge (1200 pages) volume containing exhaustive
- discographies and reviews of artists in every imaginable type of music. A very
- impressive tome that everyone ought to check out. (published by Miller
- Freeman, ISBN 0-87930-264-X)
-
- Anyway, Kohanov is editor of the Contemporary Instrumental section of the book.
- She divides CI into the following sub-genres:
-
- Solo Instrumental (Windham Hill, Narada Lotus, etc)
- Adult Alternative (pop/rock oriented)
- Progressive electronic & electro-acoustic (the majority of what we commonly
- call E-music)
- New Age (limited to artists with meditational/spiritual etc intentions)
- Ambient
- Neo-Classical
- new-acoustic (Grisman, Montreux et al)
- ethnic fusion
- techno-tribal (Jon Hassell, Michael Brook)
- chamber jazz (any small acoustic groups using improvisation)
- minimalism
