- I saw a copy of this after Clay's original posting, so I picked up
- and perused (didn't buy; gotta honor a family request not to expand
- the library pre-holidays). Of the three entries I checked, two had
- factual mistakes. But the thing I really gotta wonder about is the
- choice of reviewers. I'm not familiar with the literature in some
- of the sections, but I noticed something in regards to Africa that
- kind of bothered me. Now, I think John Storm Roberts should be
- canonized for what he's done with Original Music, his record label
- (as opposed to Original Music, his mail-order outfit, which would
- get him canonized a second time). I absolutely love the kind of
- acoustic African music of the 50s and 60s that he digs up from God
- knows where, and without his efforts it would be impossible to find.
- And I was glad to see an essay by him at the beginning of the
- section on "world music." But I question the wisdom and integrity
- of the editors who have him review the records he releases on
- Original Music. They sound like the witty, well-written
- descriptions in his catalog. For all I know, (I haven't checked),
- they are those descriptions. Not that I have a problem with what he
- says about them; they're all wonderful, and you should go out and
- buy the entire set tomorrow. But I would like to hear that from
- *anyone* else in the world but John in a reference work such as this.
-
- Given my lack of familiarity with some of the other genres
- represented, I can't comment on whether this is the case elsewhere,
- especially based on five minutes in a bookstore. But it troubles
- me, and even more so *because* I don't know about the reviewers in
- the other sections. I'll probably end up buying the book because I
- can't resist, but I'm not likely to trust it the way I do something
- like Trouser Press or Da Capo, and that's a shame, because the book
- covers a lot of stuff I would like to know more about.
