-
- From what I hear, tabla's would be a bear to start on -- you have to
- practice for 1-2 years before you can begin to make basic music. Ick.
-
- Bongos lack a low end -- something I like. A tar lacks volume and
- speed, but has a good sound in a *quiet* room -- somewhat haunting -- but
- group playing options are limited.
-
- Conga's are a fair starter -- or one of the small asiko's like from
- West Cliff Percussion -- their small pine, goat head asikos run about
- $192 retail, I believe -- their hard wood, thick goat head baby asiko run
- about $250 -- worth the xtra 58$ in my opinion. They have a fairly good
- low end, and when cranked (they are strung drums), can compete with a
- Djembe.
-
- Of course Djembe's are great for alot of different purposes, but they
- lack the warmth of tone of cowskin drums -- so maybe a full size
- asiko/cow would be best for that. Congas aren't real great on the low
- end. Djembe's have a great low end and a great high end, but good ones
- (from senegal), can get pricey -- anywhere from 375-600+ depending on the
- size of the head. I've seen djembe's from Hawaiian woods that looked
- like furniture (high polish), that sounded fair -- that sold for as much
- as 900!... Don't think it was worth that price though.
-
- I guess, a asiko styled conga or quinto from west Cliff would be a
- good deal. They have a great sound -- better than an expensive LP. I
- seem to remember them running around $325 for the Quinto, maybe $350 for
- the conga -- but don't quote me.
-
- West Cliff Percussion runs out of Santa Cruz, you phone them at (408)
- 458-1946. Tell, em William sent ya! -- maybe I can talkem into a
- discount for netters!...
-
- later...
