- I agree with dave that the 1000x gain would clip.
-
- Well Dave actually said that 30dB would clip, not 1000x.
-
- A typical guitar pickup output is 30 or so millivolts and les paul
- output can peak at greater than 100 millivolt (0.1 Volt!)
-
- Nope, pickups put out roughly thirty times this voltage.
-
- So 30 db can be made to clip on a 9 V supply quite easily.
-
- True, nonetheless.
-
- BUT ... When used with less gain, sounds like a nice addition.
-
- A high quality preamp, yes. We don't know anything about the quality of
- the preamp that started this discussion though.

-
- OK, so what is a good choice of low-noise op amp for typical guitar preamps
- with single-source 9V?
-
- Damn near anything. :-)
-
- Try a TL07x series, OP-27, NE5532, whatever; y'know anything actually
- designed for audio work.
-
- Personally, I don't like the sound of op-amp circuits because of all the
- usual high feedback and clipping issues (motto: "op-amps are for weenies"),
- so I use a low distortion discrete FET circuit instead.
