- I was building a 9-volt preamp for my accoustic-electric, which was
- putting out REALLY low signal. It was so low that I couldn't use it.
-
- I tried using some standard op amps I had laying around, like the LM324
- quad, and had no luck. I tried all kinds of gains, up into the
- thousands, with no luck.
-
- Most acoustic guitar pickups, the piezoelectric bridge jobs anyway, put out
- roughly 0.5 to 1.0 volt peak-to-peak for a hard strum. By itself this is
- usually plenty of voltage to drive any guitar amp or mixer (it's roughly the
- same output level as a Rickenbacker guitar with toaster-top pickups) except
- that the impedance is very high, and so the sound quality is greatly
- improved with a preamp. Only a little gain is needed though; 12dB at the
- most.
-
- Though you've told us nothing specific about your experimental preamp, I'll
- venture a guess that either the design of your preamp was incorrect or there
- was a construction error that kept it from working. Or the LM324 was dead.
-
- Also, the LM324 is a pretty horrible opamp to use for audio or musical
- applications for all the typical noise, high frequency, and distortion
- reasons.
-
- Then I tried the simplest thing of all, an LM386 1/2-watt audio power
- amp and two coupling capacitors. I used the default voltage gain of 20,
- and lo and behold I've got great signal coming from my guitar. I suppose
- that means that the op amp has to be capable of delivering current, and
- the 324 just wasn't suited for it.
-
- No, it means that there was a mistake in the 324 circuit. The input
- impedance of most guitar amplifiers is around 1M ohm -- the LM324 would have
- little difficulty driving hundreds of these loads simultaneously.
-
- So, power delivery is more important
- than a huge gain.
-
- Nope, power delivery is completely irrelevant and gain should be minimal.
