- if you're looking for some truly ambient industrial, you may wanna try out some
- Nurse With Wound, Current 93, Hafler Trio, early Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, mebee
- some early Chris and Cosey. early Front Line Assembly is quite ambient, and
- i'd almost consider it more movie music, with lots 'o atmosphere. Skinny
- Puppy, espesh Bites & Remission and Cleanse Fold Manipulate, are kinda a cross
- between synth, beats, and airy almost frightening tapes and manipulations. as
- for your ? about if they sound like Ministry, from the stuff i've got by SP
- [which admittedly isn't much, tho i've heard a bit of it on WREK radio in the
- past] i'd give a hearty 'No' tho SP and unk Al did work together on one disk,
- Rabies [i believe]. however, if you get a chance, listen to Twitch, an early
- Ministry album, before the aggro and 'metal' tendencies, which has a lot of
- synth work and space, and you can see how some bands followed that suit, inc.
- Nine Inch Nails, who IMO borrowed a lot sound wise from Twitch.
-
- as for personal recommendations, try these:
-
- Nurse W/Wound: Homotopy to Marie [silence, occasional beats and chimes,
- voices,instruments,silence,surreal dialogues,silence]
-
- from what i've read, other stuff by them is similar,
- and you may want to try A Sucked Orange or Metzbild
- Schwetz [sp?]
-
- Current 93: my fave is Nature Unveiled, espesh track 2, called
- 'The mystical body of christ at chorazim' i believe.
- tapes, voices, tibetan rythms and chants. hypnotizing.
- chilling. haunting. yeah, good stuff.
-
- as an intro, you may wanna try Dog's Blood Rising. its
- a bit cleaner and more cohesive than NU.
-
- Hafler Trio: ok, this is my fave of the ambient groups listed, w/
- Cabs coming in 2nd. as a recommendation, get if you
- can the Mute/Grey Area comp. TYRANNY OF THE BEAT. it
- has a lot of other groups on it like EN, but has the
- track that really turned me on to H3O, The Thirsty
- Fish/A Dirty Fire. incredible!!! fields of sounds
- caught with unidirectional mikes, panned severly to
- either speaker, w/voices and tones acting as some sore
- of score for a dream.
-
- also, they have some of the best artwork and most
- original CD casings, with abstruse texts as well.
-
- Cab Voltaire: try out LISTEN UP WITH CABARET VOLTAIRE. its got
- some of their best stuff on it, all rarities and comp
- tracks, from all over their career. admittedly it took
- me several listens to like it, but now it's one of my
- favorite CD's.
-
- early stuff to look out for: Voice of America, 2 x 45,
- Living Legends [singles and b-sides not on albums].
- if you like the later stuff as well, then from what
- i've heard, you may want to try Micro-Phonies. right
- now i'm trying to get my own hands on it.
-
- FLA: try TACTICAL NEURAL IMPLANT first to see what you
- think of them. then you may want to listen to either
- INITIAL COMMAND or CAUSTIC GRIP. IC is i believe their
- 1st album, and is quite ambient.
-
- as an addendum, they're not industrial [tho they do use a drum machine], i'd
- also include Cocteau Twins, just for a sense of well-roundedness. in
- particular try GARLANDS which is piss freeze frightening. their latest stuff
- is kinda poppy, but still is quite airy and abstract [also try VICTORIALAND
- for somn' w/out any drums or beats at all].
-
- anyway, that's my 2 pesos.
