- Hey Now,
-
- In an article (Dec. 21) Barbara Rockwell <p00220@psilink.com> writes:
-
- |I hereby open myself up to Fire on the Mountain, but I cannot resist.
- |Please note that out of 28 favorite tapes, 12 were during the Donna years.
- |Out of 21 worst show listings, only a mere 2 were Donna shows.
-
- Being a statistician, I'll take the bait. This is what is
- referred to in the field as "SPURIOUS CORRELATION". One factor X, in this
- case Donna, appears to be correlated with another factor Y, namely
- popularity, and it is misstakenly concluded that X causes Y. However, if
- the true model is of the form:
-
- Y = f(Z)
-
- and Z and X are highly correlated, then X and Y will also be highly
- correlated.
-
- In this instance, the omitted variable Z is probably related
- to the way Jerry was playing and the additional songs that they brought on
- board in the early and mid '70's. However, if you omit these influences in
- your analysis and only focus on whether or not Donna was in the band, well,
- you could have drawn an erroneous conclusion.
-
- The statistics literature is filled with examples of spurious
- correlation. A famous econometrician once showed that the number of
- sunspots is a good predictor for aggregate consumption. It should also be
- noted that the years mentioned by Barbara were also characterized by high
- inflation. Does this mean that the Dead play better during high
- inflationary periods? Kind of shoots to hell the Phillips Curve!
-
- Remember, CORRELATION does not always imply CAUSATION, Barbara :-) :-)
