- There's also a Copper Family song (no, this time I'm _not_ talking about
- the Kipper Family) called "The Battle of Alma", which I've always been
- rather fond of. It starts:
-
- A gallant young soldier a letter did write
- To his own dearest jewel, his joy and heart's delight.
- To tell her of the danger that he had entered in,
- At the Battle of Alma, where thousands were slain.
-
- It was the bravest battle that did the world surprise,
- To see our brave soldiers to stare them in the face. [sic]
- We were commanded by Lord Raglan, a man of courage bold.
- We showed them our needlework, and forced them to yield.
-
- ...and there are a few more verses; great tune, too. I understand that
- the line about the "needlework" is an idiomatic reference to fixed
- bayonets, but it's always conjured up this image of a hard-bitten,
- war-toughened British Army sergeant (played by John Cleese) standing up
- amidst the smoke and fire of battle and shouting "Right, you stinking
- Russkie bastards! This 'ere is called 'trapunto', and it was done by
- Private 'atfield over there, and this lovely bit of embroidery was done
- by Corporal Smithers. 'ad enough yet, or shall we bring out the framed
- alphabet samplers?"
