- i sat down this weekend with my stopwatch and old stereo LP ( i used to
- have a mono LP in '67 ) from maybe 68-69 ish. what i did was listen
- without earphones and stopped the watch when i couldnt hear anymore of
- the last chord or fadeout. i also did not include the blank space between
- each song, so if you add the sides together, you will be a little short
- in how long they actually last. there were only 4 songs completed, although
- i'm not sure about the Pill-Box Hat, the other 10 were definitely faded
- before the musicians finished, meaning that Columbia/Sony has a chance
- to even lengthen the CD again....
-
- * Leopardskin Pillbox Hat starts to fade out, but i heard that last
- guitar line that codes out each verse after a full verse run, the
- sort-of nah-nah line that goes "pickity pickity pickity pong", just
- as the fade completes. they may have kept on playing after, i dunno,
- but they also could have stopped.
-
- now i'll have to go back and retime Desolation Row. i was sure it was
- just a few seconds longer than SadEyed Lady. SadEyed Lady on the LP
- looks different upon close examination - the grooves are definitely
- spaced wider apart. the other 3 sides all run some 20 or so minutes,
- so i think they were scared to not pave the whole 4th side for fear of
- some kind of consumer complaint about paying "double album" price.
-
- i used to have a Highway 61 with the times printed on the bottom of the
- notes. my memory seems to remember 11:18 for Desolation Row. my friend
- back in those days had a mono of that, and the curious thing about it
- was that the mono ran a little longer at the end. on it you could hear
- a short laugh, a sort of "heh-heh". my old stereo copy with the times
- had no such laugh. but later on i had to buy it again and this time the
- times were missing from under the notes, and, in one channel, you can just
- barely catch the laugh beginning (earphones help!). curiouser and curiouser.
