- Yes, well......
- Paganini wasn't mad, just a good showman. Ditto Liszt, Gottschalk,
- and many other virtuoso instrumentalists of the previous century. They
- were the rock stars of their time, in essence.
- As to "insane" composers: it's a tough call to some extent since
- insanity is a pretty mutable concept once you get beyond the obviously
- delusional. Tchaikovsky was pretty obviously neurotic and apparently
- suffered from at least a mild affective disorder, and the fact that he was
- trying to deny his homosexuality didn't help any, I'm sure. And Charles
- Valentin Alkan was so excessively reclusive that it bordered on (if not
- crossed over into) some kind of madness.
- Beethoven had more than his share of emotional hangups, Scriabin
- was a religious mystic and perhaps suffered from hallucinations, and
- Rachmaninov suffered from severe bouts of depression. On the other hand
- Bach, Haydn, Dvorak, and numerous other Big Names(tm) led lives of boring
- normalcy.
