- Some chamber groups, like the Borodin Trio and the Amadeus Quartet,
- are named after a composer. Others, like the Budapest Quartet, are
- named after a place. The Beaux Arts Trios was named after an artistic
- ideal, I presume. The Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio has a name
- which is nearly unmanageable, as it is named after each one of its
- members: Joseph Kalichstein (piano), Jaime Laredo (violin) and Sharon
- Robinson (cello).
-
- Fortunately, their music-making is far more mellifluous than their
- name might suggest. Their first CD for Dorian Recordings has just been
- released (CD-90164), and it contains four trios by Franz Joseph Haydn
- -- Hob. XV12 (in E minor), 27 (in C), 28 (in E), and 25 (in G, the one with
- the "Gypsy rondo"). The recordings were made in September 1991 in the
- Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy, NY, the lucky site of many of
- Dorian's recordings.
-
- Hearing these performances, one might well mistake Mendelssohn for
- the composer of these trios. The K-L-R Trio plays these Classical
- works with an almost Romantic expressiveness. The music is made to
- sound smooth and suave without the hard edge that other trios favor,
- particularly those of the "authentic" instruments variety.
-
- There is nothing wrong with playing these charming works in this
- manner, and if it wins more admirers for Haydn's trios, then all the
- better. I know that more than a few obsessive-compulsive purists are
- going to get their noses out of joint about these performances, but
- there is room for all sorts of different viewpoints in the musical
- world, and these perfomances are very satisfying and have ample
- technical and musical merit.
-
- Fortunately, the recording keeps the three instruments separate
- without making them sound as if they were recorded in separate rooms.
- In keeping with the performances, the sound is warm and mellow. This
- is a pleasant release, and I hope that Dorian will be lucky enough to
- record the K-L-R Trio again.
