- Rysanek's ability to galvanize an audience never ceases to amaze. It's about
- 35 years since her Met debut (as Lady Macbeth, replacing the fired Maria Callas
- and stepping into a major controversy). I remember seeing one of her first Met
- performances as Senta in The Flying Dutchman around 1960. The Met did Dutchman
- in three acts back then. Her performance in the second act was so overwhelming
- that there was a 20 minute ovation during the intermission. This season, she
- repeats that feat as the Kostelnicka. Has any other singer been able to main-
- tain Rysanek's power for so long a time period? After all, it is not as if she
- specialized in repertory easy on the voice.
