  11. Rysanek's ability to galvanize an audience never ceases to amaze. It's about
  12. 35 years since her Met debut (as Lady Macbeth, replacing the fired Maria Callas
  13. and stepping into a major controversy). I remember seeing one of her first Met
  14. performances as Senta in The Flying Dutchman around 1960. The Met did Dutchman
  15. in three acts back then. Her performance in the second act was so overwhelming
  16. that there was a 20 minute ovation during the intermission. This season, she
  17. repeats that feat as the Kostelnicka. Has any other singer been able to main-
  18. tain Rysanek's power for so long a time period? After all, it is not as if she
  19. specialized in repertory easy on the voice.
