  23. I seem to recall the date on the letter being 1924, so it would be
  24. before the infamous NYPSO debacle of 1927/8 in which Olin Downes and
  25. the 'society' types who ran the symphony society muscled out
  26. Furtwaengler (and Mengelberg) in favour of Toscanini.

  28. I am still amazed at what those seasons must have been like, with
  29. those 3 at the helm of the orchestra. Unimaginable today.
