- What does Karajan's personality (or whether he was a Nazi) have
- to do with ability as a conductor? Whatever he was like as
- a person, he was a superb conductor in some areas. The problem
- with the recommendation is not that it recommends Karajan, but
- that it does so without any caveats. The caveats: Karajan is
- very good for most Romantic composers. His Beethoven is overall
- very, very good (far better than newer conductors like
- Norrington). However, his Mozart is somehow flat, as is his
- Stravinsky.

- For Mozart, off the top of my head, I'd recommend George
- Szell, Karl Boehm, and Neville Marriner. But not Karajan.
