- There is some history behind this "mixed" recording. The original
- conductor was Leo Blech, and the original Brunnhilde Ella Flesch. However,
- both were Jewish, and were jettisoned from the record before it was released.
- Most of it was re-recorded with Bruno Walter and Martha Fuchs (Brunnhilde).
- The Wotan, too, was originally Alfred Jerger, replaced by Hans Hotter, who
- was more acceptable to the Nazi regime...
- (I cannot remember exactly why the last scene remained with the old
- version. Perhaps the re-recording had to be stopped before it was completed.)
- Hotter and Melchior are both in superb voices on this recording.
