- This is one of opera's sublime moments - but a warning - be sure to get the
- early Harnoncourt recording - the later "soundtrack" of the JPPonelle
- production isn't up to par with this one.

- I also like the performance of this duette by Arleen Auger and Della Jones
- (in the R Hickox production on Virgin - how apt! - which is a beautiful, if
- stark, production of this opera.) The voices shimmer in a way that sends
- shivers down your spine (has to do with the "beats" set up by two close-but-
- not-quite-identical notes) - this is an effect that is almost surely not
- going to be present when Nerone is sung by a male singer - even less if the
- male is a tenor. If you like your decadence "stripped down" then try out
- the Hickox "Poppea".
