- I can't speak for Deryk, but I suspect the fourth symphony is included.
- It's commonly considered the easiest introduction to Bruckner's
- symphonies, but (of the Bruckner symphonies I've heard) I'd opt for
- #8 as a good intro too.
-
- Regardless, I'd say it's worth your while to open years and take the
- time to listen to Bruckner. His music is definitely difficult
- at times. The sudden changes from theme to theme can be very
- disconcerting. But, if you can accept the more sudden, often
- violent, transitions, his music is quite rewarding. The slow movement
- of the 8th seems to me a wonderful construction. Especially the last
- 8 or 9 minutes where he builds the music to a dramatic climax that
- you'd think should end the movement but brings a tranquil theme out of
- that dramatic "fake ending". It's just brilliant.
-
- Also, I am wondering why Deryk mentions 11 symphonies. I though
- Bruckner wrote only nine.
-
- A question: I have versions of #4, #7, #8, #9. Of these #8 is my
- favorite, and #9 is a very close second. What's recommended for the
- next Bruckner symphony to explore? I was considering #5. I
- believe there's a Solti-led performance that includes (as a filler)
- the "Te Deum". Is this a recommended place to delve?
