  27. This label, Virtuoso, produces great performances that
  28. are often available on other labels at much higher prices. They have
  29. released, for example, Furtwangler's La Scala RING at ridiculously
  30. low prices. These are available on another label at full price, and
  31. more! The sound is just as good, or bad, as the others.

  33. Incidentally, let me plug here the recently re-released Beethoven
  34. cycle by Szell. This is consistently high calibre, technically
  35. marvelous conducting. The Cleveland Orchestra, those days, was
  36. reknowned for their prowess, and this cycle was hailed by people as
  37. one of the best when it first came out. It is fun to have them back,
  38. nicely remastered.

  40. Though the sound in these CDs is about as good as can be expected, it
  41. is somewhat lacking in dynamic range. The higher frequencies, the
  42. cellos at times, grate a wee bit. But do not let that bother you, as
  43. it has enough of the ambience one wants.
