- This label, Virtuoso, produces great performances that
- are often available on other labels at much higher prices. They have
- released, for example, Furtwangler's La Scala RING at ridiculously
- low prices. These are available on another label at full price, and
- more! The sound is just as good, or bad, as the others.
-
- Incidentally, let me plug here the recently re-released Beethoven
- cycle by Szell. This is consistently high calibre, technically
- marvelous conducting. The Cleveland Orchestra, those days, was
- reknowned for their prowess, and this cycle was hailed by people as
- one of the best when it first came out. It is fun to have them back,
- nicely remastered.
-
- Though the sound in these CDs is about as good as can be expected, it
- is somewhat lacking in dynamic range. The higher frequencies, the
- cellos at times, grate a wee bit. But do not let that bother you, as
- it has enough of the ambience one wants.
