- to hear some people talk, yes. there are several different variations
- of the "rock is evil" thing, and i've heard them all.
-
- o "Rock is bad because the devil uses rock." this is Mike Godwin's
- (author of "Dancing With Demons") big one. he points out all the
- bad things that have been perpetrated under the aegis of rock music,
- notes that "Christian rock" has the word "rock" in it and uses the
- same beat, then tars 'em both with the same brush. finding the logical
- error in this is left as an exercise to the reader, but it seems
- effective when preaching to people who aren't comfortable with the
- music in the first place.
-
- o "Rock is 'out of balance' and is therefore evil." that's Bill
- Gothard's approach. unfortunately, there's nothing Biblical about
- this at all. in fact, it's based on a pagan belief (i believe
- originating with Aristotle) that states that different components
- of music affect the mind, soul, and body. the 'beat' supposedly
- affects the body, and so any music that is out of balance, and has
- too much beat is evil. unfortunately, Bill never tells us how to
- measure "beat","melody" or any other component, so we have to take
- his word for what's too much or too little. that section of his big
- red book is also lacking scripture references, so it's rather
- difficult to find "God's" measure either.
-
- o "Rock is to much like 'the World'." a general approach used by any
- pastor who is made uncomfortable by those long haired people. often
- found in combination with the first objection. unfortunately, they're
- never able to draw any sort of line about where we should stop being
- like the big bad "World". oh well. actually, i shouldn't be so harsh.
- some do. the amish aren't allowed cars, for example. except those that
- are. oh my head hurts. but you see where this can lead...
