- The disc spelling seems to be prevelent in the audio/video
- marketplace, where vinyl lps were sometimes referred to as discs, so
- laserdiscs and compact discs fit into this scheme. The people who use
- disks for storing data needed a consonant at the end of the word which
- wouldn't get softened when the "ette" suffix was added as disks went
- to 8" then to 5╝" then to 3╜" (how would you pronounce discette... ;-).
- The gay abandon with which "technical" people re-model language is a
- wonder to behold, I have heard a salesperson talk about "dollars per
- megaflop" as if the acronym flops were plural...
-
- ObDisclaimer: I don't claim to be any judge of linguistic accuracy,
- just my 2ó...
