  24. Well, because he was extremely intelligent, and knew that heroin was not
  25. the thing to do, but because he was nonetheless powerless against his own
  26. addiction?  That does not seem like a paradox, by any means.  He knew well
  27. that narcotics weren't helping him at all, but that knowledge didn't help
  28. him to shake the habit.
