- Well i finally broke down and started buying the japanese imports of out
- of print Miles Davis cd's. It seems that the album Dark Magnus and Live at
- the Philharmonic have less sound quality than the regular Columbia releases.
- Does anyone else out there agree with me?
-
- I'm not quite sure what "less sound quality" means. To me, it sounds
- like a typical mid-70s concert recording of a medium size electric
- band. Not great, not bad. The cd remaster is ok, somewhat less
- cluttered than the lp version but not shrill and thin like some early
- Sony cd remasters (and also not overly compressed like many NoNoise
- remasters).
-
- Are there any albums that have
- extremly poor sound quality and should be avoided?
-
- You mean any Sony Miles Davis cd reissues? I wouldn't say that any
- have "extremely poor sound", but in many cases the cd versions are
- worse than than the lps.
-
- There are a number of Miles bootlegs out with pretty bad sound but in
- nearly every case, the choice is bad sound or none at all (ie the
- material isn't available in any other form). Like any serious fan of
- Miles, I would always choose the former.
-
- I would hate to buy these imports at 40 bucks a crack and then
- later see them released here in the states in a remastered form.
-
-
- Dark Magus may not be released domestically at all - after all, the lp
- never was. Even if it is, I wouldn't expect that further remastering
- will improve the sound.
