- No one's collection should be lacking the following:
-
- Money Jungle -- Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, and Max Roach
-
- This would probably be my single desert island disk, if I had to pick one.
-
- This recording really gives you a chance to hear Duke play some heavy shit
- on the piano. And you can guess how Mingus and Roach are. The
- combination works beautifully. All Ellington compositions.
-
- Miles Davis once panned a selection from this recording in a Blindfold
- Test. When they told him who it was, he responded "What's Duke doing
- playing with Mingus? This is terrible." I have great respect for Miles
- as a musician, composer, and curator of great bands. However, I don't
- take much stock in his abilities as a critic.
