  14. The title says it all.  I'm seriously considering creating an alt.*
  15. newsgroup whose purpose is to discuss all aspects of 1920's and 30's jazz,
  16. dance and big band music.  Discussion would include discographical
  17. information, CD sources, discussions about various jazz artists, modern
  18. orchestras today who are recreating the 20's and 30's sound (and I'm not
  19. referring to Dixieland which is not a true 20's and 30's sound), etc., etc.

  21. Though the official intent of rec.music.bluenote is to be all-inclusive (and
  22. it is a good newsgroup), it is obviously oriented towards post-War jazz and
  23. blues, effectively stifling discussion of the pre-War era by sheer volume of
  24. posts.  I don't even read (and rarely post) to rec.music.bluenote for this
  25. reason.  Thus I see a potential need for a separate newsgroup (find a need
  26. and fill it, right :^) ).

  28. If you have an avid interest in the 20's-30's jazz/dance/big band music,
  29. and you'd like to see this newsgroup created, let me know.  If I get 20 or
  30. more people interested, then I will create the newsgroup.  If not, then it
  31. is not worth creating it since a critical number of people is needed to keep
  32. any newsgroup "alive".

  35. What should we name it should there be enough interest?  Some ideas:

  39. alt.music.20's-30's  (kind of hard to type out)
  40. alt.jazz.early

  55. (p.s. Why an alt.* group and not a rec.music.* group?  Because I don't believe
  56. that it would be possible - the Herculean requirements for creating a rec.*
  57. group would be too difficult, in my opinion, to fulfill.  If somebody else
  58. would like to try, they are free to do so, but I'm not going to even attempt
  59. it, so don't even ask me  "Well, why don't you make it a rec.* instead...?".
