- The answer is "probably not".
-
- Despite the popular myth, the pre-1964 music scene in the U.S. was not
- only the Bobby Rydell's and the Fabian's, but also Motown, the California
- bands, and the beginning's of the folksy "protest" music. In short, there
- was some good music being made on this side of the pond.
-
- As far as Buddy is concerned, he may have reached a peak by the time he left
- the Crickets in late 1958. Because he was killed so quickly thereafter, we can
- not really say what might have happened.
-
- Holly's (and Presley's, and Berry's, and Perkins') influence had already been
- felt across the pond. No matter how good any subsequent music might or might
- not have been made by these men, the "American Invasion" was over and done
- with by 1957.
-
- So, what does all this mean in answer to your question?
-
- Namely, that had Buddy Holly lived, he probably would've continued writing
- and performing. However, there are no guarantees that he could've kept up
- his pace, particularly considering the fact he was suffering from financial
- troubles at the time of his death. But, even if he had continued to produce
- high quality music, he probably would've been only another voice (albeit,
- probably a very popular one) in the pre-Beatlemania landscape of American
- music.
-
- As far as the Beatles were concerned, nothing really would've been changed by
- Holly continuing to live. Everything would've been exactly the same through
- their release of "I Want to Hold Your Hand". It is really pointless to
- speculate whether Beatlemania would've taken hold in the US (or at least to
- the extent it eventually did) -- but I say it would have. Why? What the
- Beatles presented to the world in 1963/4 was American rock 'n roll (from the
- *fifties*) filtered through their uniquely British (Liverpudlian)
- personalities and sensibilities. Again, this would not have changed. Perhaps
- the biggest change in this alternate universe is that Holly would've pioneered
- the era of singer/songwriter/producer -- making it much easier for the
- "British Invasion bands" to later take that same mantle.
