- a friend and i had a discussion yesterday, and he posed this question to
- me:
-
- the beatles have said several times that their music was based on
- motown, they did a couple of smokey robinson covers, some elvis tunes,
- and john said more than once that his idol was buddy holly. also, a number
- of the ''big name'' musicians touring england were american. flipping
- pages in my beatles live book (gloat), i can find several mentions of
- ''american greats'' gene vincent, davy jones, and roy orbison.
-
- the question is, what might have happened is buddy holly hadn't died in
- feb 1959? my friend suggested that we would be talking about 'the
- american invasion' of british music, and the beatles would be 'just
- another local skiffle band with a local following.' buddy holly,
- at the rate he was writing songs, would now have enough money to
- buy the elvis presley catalog, and spend the change on houston, texas.
-
- any opinions?
-
- on a side note, has any splicing expert managed to put /her/majesty/ back
- in between /mean/mr/mustard/ and /polythene/pam/ ?
-
- just some more random ramblings.
-
- saki for congress.
