- Yes, there is a 1-up bonus stage item programmed into the game, which
- they apparently decided not to use. If you want proof that they do exist, and
- you have a Sonic cart that lets you get into debug mode, just go to a special
- stage, go into debug mode, move Sonic outside the boundaries of the maze, and
- exit debug mode. Sonic will start falling through empty space, and will
- usually eventually arrive at a bunch of garbage (random memory contents,
- probably), which will often include some of these 1-up bumpers.
- As far as I know, though, there's no way to get one to appear in
- non-debug play.
