- An excellent suggestion, IMHO, though not one which I have any idea how to
- implement. Back in the wild days of the Washington Judge, if I wanted to
- play in a grey-only 12-hour-deadline Chaos game, I could just create one
- without a moderator. I can't imagine wanting such a thing, but if I did, I
- knew how to get one. Nowadays, if I want to join a game of a particular
- type, my only recourse is to write to someone and ask them to start a game
- of that type. Since I've exchanged posts and e-mail with several of the GMs
- on the two North American Judges, I personally would feel comfortable doing
- this, but I could easily see how many players would not. Conversely, I could
- easily moderate another few games without a serious drain on my time, but I
- don't know what sorts of interesting variants would appeal to people.
-
- Here's a possibl solution: What if the restriction that one could only
- become the master of a game at creation-time were removed? That would allow
- Patrick to create a game he would like to play in, join it, encourage others
- to join in, and then subsequently allow me (or some other kind-hearted
- person) to sign on as the moderator. The modification to the Judge source
- would probably not be difficult, though some provision might have to be made
- to prevent players from signing on as moderator, resigning, and then joining
- as a player... Also, a mechanism would have to be introduced to prevent a
- game from starting until the moderator position (as well as the seven player
- positions) had been filled.
-
- Actually, that last would go nicely with the proposed modification to delay
- gamestarts until a moderator issues a START command. The sequence of events
- leading to a game's starting would then be:
-
- 1) Someone creates the game, and signs on as either a player or the
- moderator.
-
- 2) Others sign on to the game, until there are seven players and one
- moderator (more players in some variants, of course).
-
- 3) The moderator issues a START command.
-
- 4) Powers are assigned, and the first deadline is set.
-
- Thoughts? In the interim, would it be worthwhile to create a gm-request list
- (perhaps at morrolan.eff.org? if not, perhaps elsewhere) for people to send
- requests to? Or perhaps we should simply encourage people to post requests
- to rec.games.diplomacy and/or DIPL-L... Other ideas?
