- The problem in your reasoning is that white d-pawn is NOT the main
- target for black in Benko, because black is aiming for active Q-side
- play and pawn at d5 keeps the center closed.
-
- I found 4.b3 only in my old BCO, which gives "4.b3 bxc4 5.bxc4 d6 =".
- Let's look into this a little bit:
- 4.Bb2 (against other moves black plays 4.-g6, when Bb2 is necessary
- anyway. One exception though: 4.Nc3 g6 5.Bd2 Bg7 6.Rb1 looks playable,
- but nothing special for white.) 4.-Nbd7 (4.-g6 5.Bxf6 exf6 might also
- be good, as B on g7 is fearsome.) 5.Nbd2 g6 6.e4 (6.g4!? Ne5!?) Bg7
- 7.Bd3 O-O 8.Nge2!? (with idea of f4+e5 or h4-h5).
-
- This looks like normal Benko position to me, except that white does not
- have pawn more and his pieces are little clumsily. On the other hand
- black does not have b2-pawn to attack. so I guess it is "=".
-
- My opinion is that 4.b3 is not worth the trouble, as there are many
- lines that give white easy if small edge.
