- I have just uploaded three game list files to the ftp site at
- valkyries.andrew.cmu.edu in the pub/chess/uploads directory.

- These compressed text files have, after uncompressing, ASCII format
- games using PGN (Portable Game Notation). The moves are presented
- using SAN (Standard Algebraic Notation) and the auxiliary game
- information is given using the General Seven Tag Format (Event, Site,
- Date, Round, White, Black, Result). Note that there is no annotation
- or any other copyrightable information in the files.
-
- The Fischer file has 773 games, the Symslov file has 398 games, and
- the Tal file has 1980 games.
-
- Unfortunately, much of the tag information is missing or is ill-formed
- for many of the games. Indeed, I am making these files available via
- ftp so that some volunteers may help with filling in the details for
- full tag data. Examples of what consistutes a complete tag set can be
- found in the last thirty games in the Fischer file; these are the data
- from the Fischer/Spassky Return Match. Here's an example:
-
- [Event "Fischer-Spassky II"]
- [Site "Belgrade, Serbia Yugoslavia"]
- [Date "1992.11.05"]
- [Round "30"]
- [White "Boris Spassky"]
- [Black "Robert J. Fischer"]
- [Result "0-1"]

- Note that the games are chronologically ordered in each file, at least
- with respect to the given year. All of the games have the correct
- "Result" tag value. All have at least one of the players' names
- correctly given; most have both. All of the games have the correct
- year given in the "Date" tag.
-
- I would really like to be able to fill in all the details myself, but
- I am rather lacking with respect to available spare time. If enough
- volunteer help can be found, we can all have the benefits of a
- publicly available ASCII games database: the Internet MGR (Master
- Games Repository).
-
- I am also looking for a coordinator to help with the project so that I
- may revert to working on the SAN Kit. I have some C source available
- to help with the coordination task.
