- INSIDE CHESS
- December 21, 1992
- Volume 5, Issue 25-26
-
- The final issue of "Inside Chess" for 1992 is the traditional
- double issue with the index for the last six months. IM John
- Donaldson takes a good look at the Immopar quick-play which was
- won by world champion Gary Kasparov. This is followed by an
- interesting piece by a one NM Rich Jackson. He played on the
- combined British/U.S. Virgin Island team in the last olympiad at
- Manila and annotates a few of his games against lesser known
- lights; entertainingly different if not riveting.
-
- GMs Adams, Ivanov, Ilic and Dmitry Gurevich annotate games from
- recent events while separate articles by Minev and Fishbein both
- focus on a similar theme: learning from your mistakes. Be that
- as it may, the most intriguing part of this particular issue,
- from our point of view, is the Letters/Editorial page. After
- announcing that IC will no longer be involved with the rating of
- Rapid Chess, there is a letter from Floyd Boudreaux of Glen
- Burnie, MD. With the heading "Champion of Nothing?" (inserted by
- the magazine, not Mr. Boudreaux), it reads in full:
-
- Dear Mr. Seirawan:
-
- Concerning the first half of your Editorial in "Inside Chess
- Vol. V, Issue 23, c'mon Yasser, who are you kidding? To
- compare the chess world with the boxing world is a weak and
- absurd argument. FIDE is the *only* official organ of
- worldwide chess, as we all well know. Fischer *was* the FIDE
- World Champion from 1972-75. Kasparov *is* the FIDE World
- Champion from 1985 until he is defeated.
-
- All of us out here living in the real world, not having a
- sycophantic and financial interest in the "Second Coming" of
- Fischer, know the facts: Fischer relinquished the title of
- World Champion to Karpov by refusing to defend it,
- regardless of conditions. Fischer's return match with
- Spassky was simply an extremely lucrative exhibition match,
- despite Fischer's paranoid claims to the contrary. In other
- words, Fischer is World Champion of Nothing until he defeats
- Kasparov, or whoever is World Champion at the time.
-
- In response, Yasser sticks to his editorial guns. We don't
- necessarily agree with him, but hats off, at least for
- consistency. An interesting finale to an interesting year.
