- NEW IN CHESS YEARBOOK 25, Edited by Genna Sosonko & Paul van der
- Sterren, Interchess 1992, 238pp., $24.00 (softcover); $29.00
- (hardcover).
-
- The third instalment for 1992 of the New In Chess Yearbook
- series maintains the high standards of analytical work and
- topicality. There are thirty-three database surveys, i.e.,
- articles on particular opening variations. These are accompanied
- by three theoretical articles, comprehensive and detailed looks
- at the Catalan Accepted (4...dxc4), 6...Nbd7 in the Saemisch and
- the French Tarrasch.
-
- Several database surveys are notable both for their subject
- matter and authorship. Indian GM Viswanathan Anand and American
- GM Yasser Seirawan contribute to surveys on the Caro-Kann, while
- British GM Nigel Short authors a survey on the Worrall Attack of
- the Ruy Lopez. Readers may recall that Short used this Spanish
- variation quite effectively in his defeat of former world
- champion Anatoly Karpov in their semi-final candidates match.
-
- Other survey contributors include GMs Ian Rogers, Anatoly
- Karpov, Larry Christiansen, Mikhail Gurevich and, to the best of
- our knowledge, for the first time ever in the western press,
- Russian wunderkind Vladimir Kramnik. He teams up with Langeweg
- for a survey of a recent development (11 g4!?) in the Classical
- Variation of the King's Indian Defense.
-
- Players who demand to be on the cutting edge of opening theory
- will not want to miss the latest number of the New In Chess
- Yearbooks.
