- I strongly disagree with this assertion. A large number of times an attempt
- to rescue just changes a result from poor (or even average) to atrocious.
- Even your "competent" opponent is to a large extent guessing when they pass
- take out doubles, especially given the huge range of hands that are handled
- by a take out double these days. The entire hand often hinges on essentially
- random factors (such as locations of 9's and 10's in unbid suits). It is
- often the case that you
- a) go down for less than their best contract
- b) make your contract (much more common at matchpoints, of course)
- c) go down less than you would if you try and rescue.
- d) go down for less than you theoretically should since a 1 level suit
- contract is quite hard to defend against.
-
- All of this is totally ignoring the fact that if opponents know they can
- spook you into running they have all sorts of psychological gambits
- available to them.
-
- Now, if I have a real second suit or an atrocious first suit I might well
- attempt to rescue myself, but with most hands that opened a 5 card major
- without a side suit I'll just sit and take my lumps.
