- Steve was the first to respond to Ron's problem a week ago. While he amused
- us with his satire, he also listed the three best options. None of the five
- subsequent posts has even mentioned 4H.
-
- I think 4H is the best of the lot, because we have an even chance of making it,
- because 4H is more likely to get us to our better major-suit game than double,
- and because 4N takes us past a major-suit game while risking a five or six-trick
- set.
-
- RHO figures to have 8-10 HCPs with 1-3 hearts. That leaves 10-12 HCPs and
- 6-8 hearts for LHO and partner. If partner has half those points and half
- those hearts, 4H will be a good contract. Even if we have a 4-3 fit, it
- should play well, since partner figures to have some strength in spades and
- shortness in diamonds.
-
- Partner will probably bid 4S over our 4H if he has at least five spades and at
- most two hearts. That's good. On the other hand, if we double, partner would
- choose spades with four spades and three hearts, or five spades and four
- hearts, or maybe four spades and four hearts. That's bad.
-
- 4N could well be a good contract. However, 4H or 4S might be better, and an
- immediate 4N call precludes reaching either of those contracts. Besides, if
- East has an entry, 4N will go down in flames, but a game contract in our best
- suit will at least be close to making.
